Blagaj sits quietly at the base of a dramatic cliff where the Buna River springs from an underground cave system, creating one of Bosnia's most naturally stunning settings. This small village, about 12 kilometers from Mostar, centers around a 16th-century Sufi monastery that seems to grow directly from the rock face above the emerald-green water. The place has an almost mystical quality - the way the ancient tekke reflects in the still water while dervishes once practiced their spiritual rituals creates an atmosphere that feels removed from time. Despite its proximity to tourist-heavy Mostar, Blagaj retains an authentic, contemplative character that makes it feel like a genuine pilgrimage site rather than just another photo opportunity.

Blagaj's dining scene centers entirely around the riverside restaurants that specialize in fresh trout caught from the Buna River itself. These family-run establishments like Villa Velagić and Vrelo serve the fish grilled or fried with simple preparations that let the quality speak for itself, alongside traditional Bosnian sides like ajvar and fresh bread. The setting honestly matters as much as the food - eating literally over the river spring with the tekke in view creates an atmosphere you won't find elsewhere. Most restaurants operate seasonally and focus on lunch service, though some stay open for dinner during peak summer months.

Late spring through early fall (May-September) offers the best weather and full access to all activities, with restaurants and boat operators running normal schedules.
